Vergelegen Facilities

Information Centre / Gift Shop
On arrival at the Vergelegen Heritage Area, visitors pass through the old stables, converted into a reception area. The centre is the focal point for information and tours, and also boasts a gift shop containing many locally produced items.

Interpretive Centre
The adjacent stable building was converted into an interpretive centre with an illustrated history and development of Vergelegen . Staff are available on request for informative historical talks for groups.

Wine Tasting Centre
The fine wines produced at Vergelegen may be sampled in the Wine Tasting Centre (closed on Sundays from May to October). From this point, bookings may be made for one of the three daily tours to the winery. Sampling fine vintages without breaking the bank is something most money-conscious people would love to do. It’s a chance to do something new and different from visiting yard sales or browsing the web for freebies, and of course, a chance to go home with a mouth full of flavour!

Octagonal Garden
During Sir Lionel and Lady Phillips’ tenure (1917 – 1940), the Octagonal Garden was transformed into a typical English garden with magnificent herbaceous borders. The seasons are noted by the ever-changing panorama of colour.

Homestead
Guarding the front entrance to the homestead are five magnificent Chinese camphor trees planted by W A van der Stel between 1700 and 1706. They are the oldest living, officially documented, trees on the subcontinent and were declared a National Monument in 1942. The Main House of the homestead is open for viewing (occasionally closed during special functions).

Lady Phillips Restaurant
To the north of the homestead, sheltered by Liquid Amber trees and overlooking the croquet lawn, is the Lady Phillips Restaurant, where refreshments and lunches are served.
Teas and Coffees from l0h00 to 11h45 and 14h30 to 16h00
Lunches from 12h00 -14h30

Rose Garden
Planted on the site of a former tennis court, the Rose Garden is a highlight for horticulturists and novice gardeners alike.

Rose Terrace
Overlooking the Rose Garden, the Rose Terrace provides al fresco lunches during summer months. Open from November to April from l0h00 to 16h00.

Library
Built in 1816 by the Theunissen family, following the demolition of Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s original wine cellar, the building was converted into a library by Lady Phillips to house Sir Lionel’s vast book collection.
Monday – Saturday between 11h00 – 15h00 and Sunday 11h00 – 13h00 and 14h00-16h00.
Membership cards available at the Gift Shop

Margaret Roberts Herb and Vegetable Garden
In May 1993 Margaret Roberts opened the newly planted herb and vegetable garden which is adjacent to the Visitors Reception Area. This garden supplies ingredients for many of the delicious dishes served in the Lady Phillips Restaurant. Some of the plants in the garden are angelica, basil, bergamot, santolina, lemon balm, soapwort, chamomile and, of course, the famous quartet of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Guided Farm Walks
Tuesdays and Saturdays 08h30 to 10h00, followed by a continental breakfast at the Lady Phillips Restaurant R30 including the entrance fee. Walking shoes and sun hats recommended.* Bookings via Lady Phillips Restaurant (021) 847 -1346

Winery
The octagonal design of the winery reflects that of the walled garden laid out by Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700. Only a single level is visible above ground. Three working levels lie buried in a tower configuration which allows for gravity flow and gentle handling of the wine.

Disabled Visitor Facilities
A wheel chair is available at the Visitors Centre. A map indicating the most level route through the grounds and gardens is also available. Toilets are accessible in the Wine Tasting Centre and the homestead. When making a reservation at the Lady Phillips Restaurant, please request wheelchair seating. Guided tours for the visually impaired are available if booked in advance.
